5 website mistakes costing contractors jobs.

We audit a lot of contractor websites. The same five problems show up over and over, and each one quietly costs real jobs every week. Here they are, with fixes.

1. The phone number isn't instantly tappable

Most of your visitors are on a phone, often standing in front of the problem they want fixed. If your number isn't a tap-to-call button visible without scrolling, header, hero, and bottom of every page, you're losing the impatient majority who won't hunt for a contact page.

Fix: sticky header with a tap-to-call button. This is the single highest-ROI change on most contractor sites.

2. The site loads slowly

Every second of load time bleeds visitors. Heavy sliders, uncompressed photos, and bloated themes are the usual culprits. A homeowner comparing three companies won't wait for the slow one.

Fix: compress images, kill the carousel, and aim for under two seconds on mobile. Test on a real phone with mobile data, not your office Wi-Fi.

3. No proof above the fold

A visitor decides whether to trust you in seconds. If they have to scroll to find reviews, photos of your work, or how long you've been around, plenty never do. 'We're licensed and insured' in a footer isn't proof; it's wallpaper.

Fix: star rating, review count, and one or two strong job photos near the top of every page.

4. Quote forms that feel like tax returns

Every extra field cuts completions. Name, phone, and what they need, that's enough to start the conversation. You can collect the rest on the call you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Fix: three fields, one clear button, and a confirmation that sets expectations ('We'll call you within one business day').

5. One generic page for everything

A single 'Services' page listing twelve trades ranks for none of them. Google rewards pages that match specific searches: 'stump grinding springfield' should land on a stump-grinding page, not a generic menu.

Fix: one page per core service, written for the customer who needs exactly that. It's the backbone of local SEO and it converts better too.
